My review:
This is the kind of book not everyone would enjoy reading. But if you want to take a chance, go in blind! Don’t read the blurb, don’t check out the back of the cover and definitely don’t read reviews, except for the next line.
This book is challenging. You are forced to challenge your own thoughts about things you’re pretty sure of. And it’s emotional, raw , kinda hurts you so much that the characters linger on your mind way after finishing the book. So if you think you need to read something like that, pick this up.
I didn’t know what this book was about when I requested it on Netgalley. I just saw it around the blogsphere and thought I’d give it a shot. Didn’t know if I would even get approved, I did.
Then last night, as the deadline (publishing date) approached , I thought I’d start reading. It’s not like I had to finish it in one sitting, but I did. It was THAT interesting. I didn’t want to put it down without knowing what happens with Wavy.
There are so many topics I wish to discuss, so let’s start with the writing of the book .
I LOVED how there were so many POV’s . We get to see the situation from every angle, through everyone’s mind. And that was important because of the book’s theme. And the writing is wonderful. It’s my honest opinion that 40% of my liking towards this book is because of the writing.
The rest of the 60% would be the characters and the story. Most interesting character would have to be Wavy, I felt most emotionally connected to Kellen, most messed up Val and most adorable Donal. I did find Wavy’s character to be quite weird in the first few chapters. Since I didn’t even know what this book was about, I assumed she was the creepy kid in a horror story. But when I read the explanation behind her behaviour, her mother’s behaviour towards her, I was disgusted and sad.
Actually, that’s me throughout the book, sometimes disgusted, sometimes sad. A drug dealer father, a mother with germ issues and a little brother to take care of. Kellen is the only normal thing in Wavy’s life. I mean I can feel how alone she felt, when I read Wavy’s POV (which were my favorite) I could understand how tough her life was.
And now that I have already talked about my feelings about this book, let’s talk about what this book is actually about. It’s a love story between an eight year old girl who lives in a messed up family and a biker guy who has felt useless throughout his life. No, it’s not like Lolita, their connection isn’t due to sexual attraction.
I can understand how some people wouldn’t want to read this, but let me share a secret, I like reading about Taboo subjects , I just do. Remember how Forbidden was? It has incest but the plot is nothing like you could imagine. If you have read that book and enjoyed it, give this a chance too.
I received an ARC through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
